Shoprite leaving Nigeria; what impact will it create for Nigerians?

It is no longer news that Shoprite, Africa’s largest retailer has considered a potential divestment from its Nigerian operation. But the big question is, can the local retailers and manufacturers deal with the unbeatable price equilibrium which Shoprite has maintained in the last 15 years?  Despite the fact that economic and investment experts argue that the greatest impediment to Nigeria’s economic growth and development is due to the activities of multinational companies in the country, it can however be deduced that these companies have provided more services than any other domestic retailer in history. Their place has kept price levels at a very good position over the years and that explains why most Nigerians are happy patronizing them. In the telecommunications industry, Globacom has become a pain in the ass of many Nigerians. The idea behind the activities of Globacom is to bridge the gap between the two important classes in the society and obviously they have not achieved a...

A police official said nearly two grams of heroin, two SIM cards and a memory chip were found in a small plastic bag tied around the cat's neck.   Aruna newspaper however reported that the cat escaped on Sunday August 2, from a prison room where it was kept.  While there is no immediate comment from the prison authorities, it was however gathered that the management of the correctional facility had reported an increase in incidents of people throwing small packets of drugs, cell phones and phone chargers over the walls in recent weeks.   Police last week seized an eagle allegedly used by drug traffickers to distribute narcotics in a suburb of Colombo.   Investigations are p...

UN TO ANNOUNCE NEW STATE CARVED OUT OF NIGERIA, CAMEROON JULY 10

The United Nations has completed plans to carve out a new territory from Nigeria and the Republic of Cameroon by July 10. The creation of the new territory to be known as the United Nations Organisation(UNO) State of Cameroon may see Nigeria losing 24 local councils, by way of ceding, to the new country. Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and President Paul Biya of Cameroon, on the invitation of the then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, had in March 2003 signed documents to cede their disputed territories (Northern and Southern Cameroons) to the proposed UNO new country in West and Central Africa. According to a report in a national daily, the new state will have a total landmass of 28, 214 square km, with an estimated population of 20 million people. This was disclosed in a May 26, 2020 letter on the UNO State of Cameroon by Prof. Martins Chia Ateh, the United Nations-appointed workshops coordinator in Cameroon and Nigeria, according to the report. ...

The billionaire rapper, 42,  who made $170 million in 2020 ranks at number two, behind sister-in-law Kylie Jenner, whose billionaire status was invoked after she was accused faking her way to her billionaire status over claims  inflated her personal wealth and forged her tax returns. Brazil overtakes Italy as country with third-highest Coronavirus deaths; Toll tops 34,000

Brazil has overtaken Italy as the country with the third-highest Coronavirus death toll after a daily record of 1,473 fatalities took its total tally to more than 34,000. The figure published by Brazil’s health ministry on Thursday night showed that only the United States and the United Kingdom have registered more deaths from the disease.   The official number of infections rose to nearly 615,000, the second-largest caseload in the world, behind the US. Shortly before the numbers were released, Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro said in an online broadcast: “We can’t go on like this. Nobody can take it anymore,” Bolsonaro said of the stay-at-home measures, being implemented by state governors and mayors across Brazil even as the number of infections and deaths continues to increase.  “The collateral impact will be far greater than those people who unfortunately lost their lives because of these last three months here,” Bolsonaro said.
