Massive explosion shakes Lebanon's capital Beirut (videos)

A massive explosion erupted in Lebanon's capital Beirut on Tuesday, August 4.

The afternoon blast shook several parts of the capital with Local Red Cross reporting hundreds injured and widespread damage.

Local TV stations reported the blast was at Beirut's port inside an area where firecrackers were stored, while an Associated Press photographer near Beirut's port said he witnessed people wounded on the ground and widespread destruction in central Beirut.

Governor Bello lifts lockdown in Kabba Bunu, insists Kogi is COVID-19 free

The lockdown imposed on Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of the state over suspected cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19), has been lifted by the Kogi state government. Governor Yahaya Bello who made the announcement at the Government House in Lokoja on Friday June 5, said the decision of lifting the lockdown in the local government area was reached after samples which were tested came back negative. The Governor who insisted that Kogi state still remains a COVID-19-free state, urged residents of the state to observe protocols of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to curb the spread of the disease. This is coming days after the NCDC announced that two Coronavirus cases were confirmed in the state. Dino Melaye also confirmed this by revealing that he knows one of the patients.

A 100-level Microbiology student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Uwaila Omozuwa has been confirmed dead after being raped and beaten inside her local church. The 22-year-old student who goes to read everyday at The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Edo Province 10, Ikpoba Hill, Benin, was attacked with a fire extinguisher by unknown men on Wednesday, May 27. A family source said Uwaila died on Saturday midnight at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) where she was rushed to after the attack. He said; “The church’s security officer had gone to collect the keys to the church from its keeper when he was told that there was someone in the church already. "He got to the church only to find Uwaila in a pool of blood and next to her was the fire extinguisher which was used to bash her face. 42 percent of Nigerians lost their jobs due to Coronavirus – NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has announced that its recent survey revealed that 42 percent of Nigerians have lost their jobs due to the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. The Bureau said the study was conducted between April to May 2020, during the time when the index case was identified in the country. It was further gathered that the impact of COVID-19 has been most strongly felt in the commerce, service and agriculture sectors. While seventy-nine percent of households surveyed reported that their households’ total income have decreased since mid- March, NBS added that the economic shock experienced by Nigerians after the outbreak of Coronavirus far exceeds shocks experienced between 2017 and 2019. A judge has set bail at $750,000 each for the three other Minneapolis ex-officers charged with aiding and abetting in the killing of George Floyd. The officers, Tou Thao, Thomas Lane, and J. Alexander Kueng made their first appearances in Hennepin County District Court as friends, relatives, and celebrities gathered for George Floyd memorial service in Minneapolis. The Minneapolis Police Department fired them last week, along with Derek Chauvin, who is charged with second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in Floyd’s May 25 death.
